lately i've been receiving lotsa emails asking me where to buy matcha powder in singapore. from my sitemeter, i even saw people googling 'where does bossacafez buy matcha powder' so i thought i'll write something about this.
i'm not a matcha connoisseur by any means but from what i know, uji matcha (宇治抹茶) from the kyoto region is said to be the best and this is what i'm using. its the most common one around here. i'm not sure what grade it is but its pretty reasonably priced (around S$6+ for a 40g can) so its definitely not the best but good enough for baking. in fact i would recommend you just use it for baking/cooking and not drinking. it doesn't foam up like some really good quality matcha. anyway, here's where you can find it :
- japanese section of fairprice finest and some cold storage supermarkets
- isetan orchard
- meidi-ya
- sakuraya fish market
i absolutely DO NOT recommend using the matcha powder from baking supplies shops like phoon huat or sunlik as they smell & taste really artificial in my opinion. to store, keep it refrigerated. i usually buy about 2-3 cans at a go so i'll refrigerate one and freeze the rest.
