i went for my 2nd food event organized by ladyironchef, the first was at ochacha - the matcha latte people in may. this time the gathering was held at obolo patisserie in joo chiat and it features a dessert degustation menu/sampler platter of 3 petit cheesecakes, 4 petit entremets, 2 petit tartlets, 2 macarons & a beverage. i definitely enjoyed myself, guess its because there are more people i'm familiar with this time round, and of coz, the desserts!!
i was the 2nd person to arrive, so i went around snapping away in the little cafe, what else!
the tables & chairs hv been arranged to seat 16 people comfortably. it wasn't as cramped as i thought.
the dessert display
macarons - neatly stacked and the fattest i've ever seen. will you just look at the amount of filling in them?!
everyone was given a complimentary pack of cranberry chocolate chip cookies, one of the items on their x'mas menu. what a sweet gesture!
owners mac & june giving us a welcome speech haha. i think they're very nice people, and june is really friendly & humble!
the sampler platter - i think their desserts look very impressive, elegant and were generously decorated with gold dust, pistachios, raspberries and chocolate pieces. items on the degustation menu were :
new york cheesecake mango-passion cheesecake pinada cheesecake caraibe nikita tiramisu au chocolat le cassis chocolat noir tartlet chocolat-passion tartlet summer berries dessert shooter les macarons
and i'm gonna go into detail on just some of the items.
on the left, the nikita which consists of dark chocolate ganache mousse, cherry-raspberry gelee, pistachio ivoire mousse & chocolate-almond biscuit with kirsch. it's my favorite among all the items, and i especially adore the pistachio mousse which was lightly almond-scented, as well as the griotte (kirsch-soaked cherry) on top which tasted very strongly of liqueur. and on the right - the tiramisu au chocolat which has mascarpone creme, dark chocolate ganache, coffee infused chocolate genoise, cognac & dark rum. taste wise not too bad but not exactly memorable. the mascarpone creme was slightly sourish thus made me wonder if it was made with 100% mascarpone, or was cream cheese added as well?
on the left, the mango-passion cheesecake and right, the chocolat-passion tartlet. both failed to impress coz they just tasted really sourish without the significant passionfruit aroma. it kinda feels like you've eaten something gone bad. i'm not sure whats the fuss about combining passionfruit with chocolate but patisseries everywhere are doing it. i guess they're probably trying to recreate pierre herme's mogador macaron which uses milk choc & passionfruit but i just can't seem to appreciate. gimme the choc-raspberry, lychee-rose or pistachio-apricot combination anytime!
le cassis - dark choc ganache mousse, blackcurrant ivoire mousse, chocolate-almond biscuit & crunchy praline feuillitine. the cassis mousse has a very attractive purplish/red hue but was too sourish, plus the crunchy praline feuillitine wasn't exactly crunchy. still prefer canele's le royale.
the summer berries dessert shooter - which wasn't really a shooter. it was pretty big! possibly another of my favorite, i thought the mascarpone mousse was really good and i love the kirsch-mixed berry compote and gelee.
and the last items of the night - macha & hazelnut chocolat macarons. the macarons were mainly a disappointment but i'm at a loss for words on how to describe them. they were definitely different from those i tried - the shells were extremely thick & chewy without the significant crisp surface, and the whole thing was just too sweet.
overall there were hits & misses, as with all other cafes/restaurants but it was really really value for money @ only $23+ per person. i was so full, despite i didn't hv dinner prior to that . most people also couldn't finish the desserts, not sure the reasons tho'. maybe they had dinner and were too full, or the desserts were just too sickening after the initial few mouthfuls, or they were afraid of getting fat heh. but all in all, it was a fantastic experience, thx to brad for organizing, and it was great meeting my "dessert kakis" :p sihan, wish u were there!!
